"I met Alan Clark at Norwescon many years ago and have watched him evolve into one of the most diverse and interesting visual artists I have ever met; Magic Realism, Surrealism, it's all here. A very gifted artist and a fine friend as well." -- Bruce Taylor

My artistic roots are in Surrealism and as an illustrator my work is much influenced by Magic Realism. My opinion is that good art challenges ones perception. If I have challenged the assumptions of my audience, if I've upset their world view, shaken up their belief systems and left them trying to assemble my images into their picture of the world, then I've done my job; I've caused my audience to think, not just on an intellectual level, but on an emotional one as well. Everyone needs their smug assumptions of the world and their place in it shaken up from time to time.

To engage my audience I create images that are compelling on a story telling level. Rather than just producing a frozen action scene, I try to pose more questions with my choice of subject matter than answers; give three out of five elements of a story and then depend on my audience to fill in the rest. If I can get my audince to particpate in this way, it becomes a memorable experience for them and the work stands out - I've created something more than just a portrait, landscape or still-life.
