More Magic Realism Folks
Heidi Mosbarger
I grew up in a community that was predominantly Hispanic and Indians. What is now referred to as "magic realism" was considered a normal part of life. So when it came time to write my own books, weaving mysticism into my stories came naturally.
My novel, Dream Trees, takes place in a small island community in British Columbia. A 30 year old Haida Indian man has recently returned to the village where his mother was raised seeking solace from a troubled past. But instead, he begins having terrible nightmares. When the new social worker arrives on the island she encourages him to use his dreams to lead him through the journey into darkness that will allow him to discover his destiny in life. Magic realism is woven throughout the story including a dog who some believe may be a shape shifter.
I'm currently in the process of finding an agent and publisher for Dream Trees. In the meantime, I am writing a collection of stories about living in a jungle in Thailand as a child during the Vietnam War and the biography of my great-aunt who worked as a missionary in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) from 1923-1958. Although these are both non-fiction accounts they are loaded with magical realism.
